Starting from the a. a. 2013/2014 at the Department of Linguistic and Comparative Literary Studies the PhD in Linguistic and Comparative Literary Studies is established.

In line with the university's strong interlinguistic and intercultural focus, the PhD programme in Literary, Linguistic and Comparative Studies builds upon a well-established tradition of multidisciplinary studies, covering languages, literatures and the performing arts in Western and Eastern Europe, as well as the Americas. By articulating its methodological and geocultural skills, the programme promotes a deep understanding of different cultures and fosters dialogue between them. It also enhances internal synergies between various disciplinary fields and encourages active participation in national and international scientific research.
In an ever-changing and increasingly complex global context, the programme is committed to protecting and enhancing linguistic and cultural diversity. These are considered essential heritages and privileged vehicles for constructing or reactivate paths of integration, belonging, education and civic training. These objectives fully align with the National Research Plan's and the European Horizon Europe 2021–2027 programmes' guidelines, which prioritise the promotion of democracy, gender equality, cultural diversity, the preservation of cultural heritage, and the critical analysis of contemporary economic and social transformations in the humanities.
Drawing on a substantial group of tenured professors and researchers, the PhD program combines specialist skills with cutting-edge critical-theoretical approaches. This produces high-profile scientific output and offers training courses of great interest to a wide national and international audience. The PhD programme in Literary, Linguistic and Comparative Studies integrates the Department's main methodological and thematic areas. Recently, the scope of the PhD programme has expanded to include industrial PhD programmes, in line with European directives that promote collaboration between academic research and the world of work, including businesses, public bodies, NGOs, and cultural or charitable institutions.
The PhD programme is based in Via Duomo, in the historic Santa Maria Porta Coeli building.
The Doctorate in Literary, Linguistic and Comparative Studies intends to offer a course of advanced training in the field of disciplinary sectors and specific methodological frameworks but linked by long-standing collaborative practice.
It originates within a department that has come together in the field of continuous cultural, literary, linguistic and aesthetic intersections in an idea of interdisciplinary and supra-areas comparison and dialogue. Its scientific project exploits the variety and richness of a very broad linguistic articulation, investigated with the tools of philological-linguistic reflection and of translation theories and practices, and at the same time is based on a marked comparative vocation, aimed at deepening the modes of interchange between different literary, artistic and theatrical heritages.
Particular attention will be paid to contemporary forms of literary, performing arts and communication languages, as well as to the reconstruction of cultural genealogies that place the present in significant connection with the cultural assets of the past. The scientific approach of the project starts from an idea of the West open to interaction with the intercontinental globalised dimension in the wake of both medieval and early modern intersections and modern and contemporary ones.
